Apache tears are rounded pebbles of obsidian or "obsidianites" composed of black or dark-colored volcanic glass. They are formed when hot lava spews out of a volcano and solidifies before hitting the ground. These pebbles are relatively small; usually, less than two inches across, and are frequently dented or imperfectly round.
