Crinoids are invertebrates that live in the ocean as far down as 9000 feet below the surface, and tend to have a long stem-like body with feathery arms surrounding the head. They fossilize when the stems become encased in limestone deposits, although the arms are delicate enough usually only the stem fossilizes. Crinoid fossils have been found dating back all the way to 480 million years ago.
