Diopside is a monoclinic pyroxene mineral, typically occurring in shades of green, although it can also be found in brown or black. It's known for its vitreous luster and two directions of perfect cleavage. Diopside is relatively common and found in various geological environments, including metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and schist and igneous rocks like diorite. Some varieties of diopside, such as the intensely green chrome diopside, are used as gemstones. This mineral is also essential in studying metamorphic processes and as an indicator of specific geologic conditions.
